Before TMS, I endured extended periods of depression and self-hatred. I worked with multiple psychologists and psychiatrists over several years, continuously trying new medications and therapy. I was consistent with my treatment, and thought that if I worked hard enough my depressed episodes would vanish. But deep depression still haunted me.
My APRN eventually suggested transcranial magnetic stimulation as a way to face my treatment-resistant depression. I spent hours looking through research and talking with my APRN, and the Neurostar TMS treatment seemed promising. I was lucky enough to get approved and started at the office of Dr. Malinas and Associates.
It’s hard to overstate how supportive the office staff were. They were devoid of judgment and brimming with empathy. What are the challenges you were facing before TMS?
After years of depending on ECT to deal with my depression, I know I needed to have another way to get help. Nothing seemed to exist. When I learned about TMS during my appointment with Akel at Dr. Malinas office, I reluctantly decided to give it a try. With the help and kindness and understanding of Akel and Dr Malinas’ team I was exposed to the idea of Neurostar TMS. I met Aly, the coordinator for Dr Malinas’ TMS therapy. I loved her right away. After some early fears I got to know the team, I made the decision to proceed through the 36 sessions.
Why did you choose Neurostar TMS for treatment?
Neurostar TMS is a highly recognized program that came highly recommended by friends and staff at Dr Malinas’ office. After meeting with Akel and Aly, I decided this was the one program that really might help me.
How has TMS improved your quality of life?
I am feeling much better and am no longer struggling with day to day depression! I feel good about life and am able to enjoy family and friends. I feel good about moving ahead in my life! People around me tell me that they see change in me. They tell me I smile more, and that I look happy.
What would you say to others thinking about doing TMS?
I would tell them to absolutely give it a try as it has worked so well for me. (It has also helped a staff member at the assisted living facility where we live.) My name is Keith and I wanted to share my experience with TMS therapy.
